This composition is nearly identical to one made by Edward Weston on the same day. In 1946, when the two negatives were exposed, Cole was assisting his ailing father photograph Point Lobos. Cole and Edward frequently swapped roles, and Edward would help Cole compose a subject (as in the famed example of "North Dome, Point Lobos, 1946"). In this case, Edward produced a photo of this rock (on what is now known as Weston Beach), and Cole made his slightly cropped-in composition within an hour after (as the shadows suggest). This print is signed and dated in pencil mount recto. It has a pencil annotation “Rock Erosion, Point Lobos, 1946” in the upper right corner mount verso. This is the only print of this image the Gallery has located.
